Coach Spotlight: Coach Omar

What inspired you to become a football coach?

Honestly, coaching wasn’t even on my radar at first. I kind of got thrown into it by chance. But once I started working with the kids and saw the impact I could have—not just on their game but on their lives—that’s when it hit me. The real inspiration comes from helping these young players grow, not just as footballers, but as people. Seeing that light bulb moment when they finally get it, or the pride on their faces when they master a new skill—that’s what keeps me coming back.

What do you enjoy most about coaching on our football holidays?

It’s all about the connections, man. There’s something special about the rapport you build with the kids, the parents, the staff—it’s like one big, happy football family. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love being part of someone’s holiday memories? You’ve got everyone relaxed, soaking up the sun, and really getting into the spirit of the game. It’s not just coaching; it’s making memories that last a lifetime.

What’s your favourite drill or activity to do with the kids?

Give me anything attacking, especially 1v1s, and I’m in my element. I’ve got this drill called the Y drill passing game—it’s all about beating your opponent or defending against a top attacker. Once you master that, the rest of the game becomes a breeze.

It’s the thrill of taking someone on, getting creative with the ball, and watching the kids light up when they pull off a move. That’s where the real magic happens.

What do you think makes Football Escapes stand out from other football coaching programs?

Do you know what? Football Escapes is in a league of its own. From the moment families get that personalised video to stepping onto the pitch and collecting their kit. Every little detail is thought out, from the way we coach to the memories want to create. It’s about more than just football; it’s about making sure families have the time of their lives.

What advice would you give to young footballers who want to improve their game?

Three words: practice, practice, practice.

Whether you’re in your backyard, at the park, or wherever—just keep working at it. And hey, don’t forget to be respectful, listen to your coaches, and most importantly, play with a smile on your face. When you’re having fun, that’s when the magic happens.

What’s one thing you hope every child takes away from a Football Escapes holiday?

The memories, no doubt about it. I want them to leave with a huge smile, knowing they’ve truly enjoyed every single moment on the camp.

Whether it’s from a silly challenge or just having a laugh with their mates—those are the moments that stick with you.

And for the parents, it’s about seeing that pure joy on their kids faces. Kids teach you a lot about living and enjoying the moment. That’s what I hope our parents take away, live and enjoy the moment, just a little bit more each day. It’s all about capturing that happiness and holding onto it.

What’s the funniest thing a kid has ever said/done with you during a session?

Oh man, a boy once did this little celebration—a dance really—and it was just pure gold. I always encourage the kids to let themselves go a bit, not to be afraid of what people think. He absolutely nailed it, and I was in stitches!

If you could create a new football rule, what would it be?

Alright, hear me out—if you get nutmegged and the player keeps possession, you’re in the sin bin for five minutes. No questions asked, no arguments—just off you go. That’ll teach ‘em!

Ever been nutmegged by a 5-year-old? Be honest!

NOooooooo! Never! Well… okay, there was this one time when this kid caught me off guard, but hey, I wasn’t looking! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

What’s your go-to celebration move when a kid scores a cracking goal?

It’s gotta be the Jude Bellingham—just a bit of flair, you know? Or the classic ‘Silence the Crowd’—nothing like a bit of drama to keep things interesting!

If you could swap places with any footballer for a day, who would it be and what would you do?

Easy—R9, Ronaldo. The man was a god of football. I’d spend the whole day doing his moves, putting goalkeepers on their backsides, and just soaking up the glory. Honestly, he made football look like pure art.

If you could design a football kit in any colour or pattern, what would it look like?

That’s a tough one, but I’m thinking lilac with an artistic design running through the shirt—something bold and unique. Short sleeves, of course, and a big number 9 on the back. And you better believe it would say ‘Coach OMAR’—because there’s only one Coach Omar!

Favourite place to go with FE:

The Maldives—never been, but fingers crossed for soon! Andalusia, Spain, also holds a special place in my heart.

Coaches you love working with:

Nick, Abs, and Kayl top people, but honestly every one of them.
